Alpena Recreation

The recreation opportunities in the Alpena Area are numerous. There is truly something for everyone in each of our beautiful seasons. Indoor or outdoor, everyone can find something to match their interests

City of Alpena Bike Path - Approximately 18.5 miles long, the path travels through several of Alpena's scenic city parks and beaches along the Thunder Bay River and Lake Huron. Alpena also is a trailhead for the 71 mile Northeastern State Trail (NEST) which concludes in Cheboygan. For more information and a breakdown of the trail click here.


Hiking and biking is very abundant in the area with a number of trails offering flat and challenging terrain along with some of most beautiful beaches on Lake Huron. Many of these trails area also groomed for cross country skiing. Click on the name of the trail to view a map. Enjoy boating, sailing, diving, snorkeling and other water sports in Thunder Bay on Lake Huron or one of our numerous inland lakes such as Grand Lake, Hubbard Lake, Long Lake and many others.


The Thunder Bay River provides great opportunities for canoeing and kayaking for paddlers of all ages. Visit one of these businesses for rental information.

Northern Lights Arena is the only facility in Northeast Michigan to provide two first class, official NHL sized ice rinks within one building. Their state of the art primary rink provides seating for 1,200, an in-rink concession stand, six full service private locker rooms and an 1/8 mile rubberized running track. Come experience a multitude of entertainment options, including, but not limited to; touring comedy acts, spine tingling rodeos, big circuit wrestling and woman’s roller derby. Spend some time visiting with high end dealers at one of our exclusive camping, trailer or boating expositions.


The Alpena Events Complex is a community center located in the North River District.  The APlex offers some incredible amenities: like the Interlude Ballroom, which can accommodate up to 650 guests for social occasions or provide nearly 15,000 square feet of vendor space for trade shows.  They have four indoor tennis courts, a gymnasium, additional conference spaces, large catering kitchen, aerobic area, corporate fitness and outdoor beach volleyball courts.
